Victorian Shadows: Cape May Haunts

DAY 1

You think of Cape May as a delightful and scenic beach getaway, but did you know that this seaside town has a storied past filled with spirits, haunted happenings and unexplained phenomena? Here is your chance to explore and experience Cape May in a different way. During your journey to Cape May, you will make a short fast-food breakfast stop at your expense along the way. Upon arrival, you will have free time for lunch on your own and your expense at the charming Washington Street Mall featuring an array of one-of-a-kind boutiques and shops, as well as a pleasing mix of dining options. Late afternoon, you will check in at the Marquis de Lafayette (609-884-3500) for an overnight stay. Guest rooms feature a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and hair dryer. After a brief time to freshen up, you set out on your Spirit & Oddities Tour beginning at the 1879 Physick Estate House Museum where you'll visit select rooms and learn about the famous Harry Houdini who captivated Victorian audiences with his intricate escapes; Lonia, a Belgian beauty called the Goddess of Mystery, who Victorians adored for her spectacles of magic and many more famous Victorian masters and mistresses of illusion. You will also have time for a self-guided tour of the Carroll Gallery. You then board a Cape May MAC trolley and travel through the lovely Cape May Historic District. You'll hear strange stories from Victorian Cape May history that are chilling, mysterious or just plain weird. Afterwards, you have dinner included at the Lobster House on Fisherman's Wharf. You then return to the hotel where you will board your evening trolley for the Haunted Tales of Cape May Trolley Tour. Wind through the Historic District after dark with your guide who unfolds ghostly stories drawn from yellowed newspapers and old family letters, tales passed down, they say, by those who never quite left. Upon return to the hotel, you can retire to your room for the night.

DAY 2

Begin your day with breakfast included at the hotel before you check-out and depart for Cape May's Emlen Physick House for their Voices from Beyond the Tour during which you will hear actual spirit voices captured by MAC staff over the past 10 years. View historical photos of the Physick family and their staff alongside photos of apparitions seen inside the house. Learn about the equipment and tools used throughout history in paranormal research. Who could these voices belong to and what is keeping them connected to the Physick House Museum? Draw your own conclusions on this exciting paranormal experience. Next, you will board the motorcoach and travel to Historic Smithville for free time to explore the quaint town of over 60 specialty shoppes and delightful eateries. Feel the warm embrace of small-town hospitality as you stroll along cobblestone walkways and over foot bridges as you discover a village that seems frozen in time. After your time for self-exploration and lunch on your own and at your expense, you depart for home.
